Dr. Daniel Engebretson is the founder and president of Tailored Medical Devices, Inc. He is also the Chair of the University of South Dakota’s Department of Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Engebretson has over 20 years of experience in working and managing small business companies. After graduating with a PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1998 from Michigan State University, he served as a Senior Research Scientist at Dakota Technologies Inc., Fargo for 6 years and then moved to Sioux Falls to serve as a Senior Research Specialist at Avera McKennan Hospital for 2 years. About 12 years ago he shifted his emphasis from laboratory research to technology-based economic development with the goal of building a vibrant biotech economy in Sioux Falls, SD. In 2009, with strong support from the University of South Dakota, Dr. Engebretson established the Department of Biomedical Engineering in Sioux Falls. In 2009, he worked closely with economic development officials in Sioux Falls to establish the Graduate Education and Applied Research (GEAR) Center, which is home to the Department of Biomedical Engineering and also a business incubator for laboratory-based technology companies. The GEAR Center is the cornerstone of USD’s Research Park, The Discovery District, which was established on the same site as the GEAR Center in 2012. He serves as an ex-officio member of the Discovery District’s Board of Directors. In his current role of the Director of GEAR Center, he has helped several local, early-stage biotech companies develop technologies and prepare them for FDA-approved clinical trials.
